WHAT DOES A COMMIS DE RANG DO?

The Commis de Rang is a service employee who works in a restaurant or hotel. This job is the entry point after successfully completing restaurant or hotel management training and is thus the first step on the career ladder in the classic hierarchy.

WHAT ARE YOUR TASKS?

You assist your colleagues and the Demichefs de Rang in the daily business. Your duties will include preparing the workplace. In technical terms, this is called mise en place. This includes polishing cutlery, filling ice coolers, to ironing tablecloths in high-end restaurants. However, once the guests have arrived, you will also serve food and drinks, supporting the whole team. If you didn’t exist, the Chef de Rang would be on his own with all the tasks and a smooth service could be disrupted.

WHEN CAN I BECOME COMMIS DE RANG?

A successful completion of a restaurant/hotel apprenticeship, you will ideally achieve after 2 1/2 – 3 years. The next step is to put what you have learned into practice. Therefore, after the training is the best possible time to apply as a Commis de Rang.

HOW MUCH DOES A COMMIS DE RANG EARN?

Wages depend on many factors. When you start as a commis, work experience doesn’t play such a big role yet. Where you did your training and how you completed it can be critical. The size of the establishment, the level of cuisine, the number of guests and, of course, the state (different tariffs) fall under these conditions. The range is a salary of approx. 1.400,00 EUR – 1.800,00 EUR gross per month.

A chain is only as strong as its weakest link. The Commis de Rang is needed in every restaurant.
